What Is Geese Management?

Geese Management is a contract service that provides for a handler and several Border Collies to visit your property throughout the year to control your geese problem on your property.

Border Collies utilize their persistent inbred herding and stalking abilities to convince the geese that predators are present and that the area is unsafe for them.

The handler and Border Collies visit at random times during the week to remind the geese of constant danger.  The geese leave, moving on to other areas which seem safe, eliminating the current problem on your property.

Why Manage Geese?

We also help remove geese from hospital grounds, schools, home communities and racetracks!

Tired of the constant nuisance and mess on walkways, patios and turf?  Your lawn acts as a showcase for your home.  It displays all the pride you take in its appearance and significantly increases its value.  It can also provide a place to entertain family and friends, enjoy recreational activities or retreat to the serenity of nature.

Remove the geese and their droppings, eliminates the constant cleanup and repair of damaged turf.

Why Border Collies?

"The Goose War Goes to the Dogs"

The Border Collie is a breed of herding dogs that were developed by shepherds in the border country between England and Scotland during the last 300 years.

Their instincts to stalk create a threat for unwanted geese on your property.  Their creeping, keen-eyed, intimidating crouch creates more of a perceived threat than a dog just running after them to chase them away.  The more of a threat to the geese the longer the geese will stay off your site.

Why Are There So Many Geese Now?

According to Shannon Wilson, Geese Management, people often ask him question.  He believes that we have created the problem over time, and only Mother Nature knows how she is going to correct it.

In the early 1900's we saw fit to federally protect all varieties of Canadian Geese.  When geese were first protected they migrated from Canada and back each year.  True migratory Canadian Geese are dwindling in numbers.  In an effort to save them from extinction, the hunting season has been shortened.

We have created an environment that gives cause for the geese to feel, "why leave?" Over time, we have developed lush green, fertilized lawn area for the geese to find an abundant food source.  This factor has lead to a variety of geese that only migrate within a 200-mile radius of where they were born.  These geese are now called "resident Canadian Geese".  Although the true migratory geese numbers are dwindling, the resident geese are multiplying rapidly.

Short of an act of Congress that would extend the hunting season, the next step is up to Mother Nature.  Until then, the geese problem will continue to be with us.

Either live with it or hire Geese Management.

How Long Does it Take For the
Geese to Leave My Property?

The first time the geese leave, they are gone for up to 4 hours.  After a second visit from the Border Collies, the geese remain away for up to 8 hours, then 24 hours, and then 48 hours.  Usually time frame to get initial control is about 10 to 12 weeks.  We continue to make visits to insure that they stay away.   Take away the threat of predators, and the geese will return.

Normally, we can reduce the number of geese returning to your property to a reasonable number and reducing the problem.  However, there will be a small number of geese that continue to return.  This is normal since your site has been home longer than we have been visiting.  It is important to note that geese will continue to return for up to 3 years if they were born or nested on your property.

What is the Cost?

Service contract costs are based on the following factors:

  • Current number of geese present

  • Number of nesting pairs

  • Size & number of water features

  • Desired control

The usual number of visits during a year varies from 50 to 100 visits.  Normally for new customers, we start at 75 visits for the first year.

All contracts are based on the number of visits and billed monthly.  Packaged visits may be arranged.
